What is the purpose of the role?
The Junior Legal Counsel will assist the Head of Legal and Senior Legal Counsel in ensuring the management and mitigation of legal risk across the business and ensuring legal compliance. This varied role will interface with, and be jointly responsible for, the day to day performance of our outsourced legal services ("the Legal Service Provider") provider to ensure our contractual requirements are being met and the anticipated benefits of outsourcing realised. This also includes supporting the Senior Legal Counsel with the management of other panel law firms and related work.

What will this role involve?
Ensuring that the Legal Service Provider and panel law firms are being correctly instructed and assisted by Thames Water.
Verifying the legal services performed by the Legal Service Provider and panel law firms and required by Thames Water internal clients/business units.
Trouble-shooting to unblock issues that arise with the Legal Service Provider and panel law firms on a daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual basis and to find solutions to the same.
Identification of emerging, common issues and legal and commercial risks and agreeing most practicable means of addressing/mitigating these with the Head of Legal, the Senior Legal Counsel, the Legal Service Provider and panel law firms.
Day to day management of the Legal Service Provider and panel law firms in its delivery of legal services to Thames Water and primary interface between Thames Water, the Legal Service Provider and panel law firms, and primary Thames Water internal interface for all aspects of the outsourced legal services.
Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel (and, where required, the Head of Legal) or other parts of the business on all aspects of Legal compliance, material projects/matters and litigation risk.
Liaison with supply chain/procurement to examine/verify Legal Service Provider and panel law firm requirements, and any other required legal services from time to time.
Management, supervision and/or conduct of any legal matters falling outside the scope of the outsourced legal services.
What are we looking for?
The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor in England and Wales, be able to hold an unrestricted legal practising certificate from the Solicitors Regulation Authority. You will have experience of providing commercial legal advice preferably within a regulated environment, to agreed time and budget constraints. In addition you must possess a varied legal skillset but with commercial contracts experience. Experience of advising on other legal areas such as contentious matters/disputes property law or competition law would also be an advantage. You will have an understanding of contracts and commercial law, with experience (either internally or with another firm/organisation) in managing and co-ordinating the provision of legal services, and possessing strong contract management skills necessary for ensuring compliance with contractual obligations/agreed protocols. Knowledge of the legal demands/requirements of a regulated entity is desired but not essential. In addition to this, you will be a resilient self-starter with the proven aptitude to effectively communicate with senior managers and external stakeholders. You will be able to work in a rapidly changing and fast paced environment at management level. The skills to make important decisions based on analysis, risk assessment and sound judgement are also required. A flexible approach to working and can do attitude are essential.
Thames Water information and salary details
This role is based in our central Reading head office, offering a salary up to £55,000. In addition to the basic salary you will also receive bonus, car allowance, private medical insurance and industry-leading pension scheme.
