Trunk sewers technician

Thames Water
Date Posted
3rd December 2018
City of London
£22,000 Per Annum

What is the purpose of the role?

Working as part of a small team you will be required to carry out routine operations and basic process maintenance of our main trunk sewer network. Based at either our Wick Lane Depot in Bow, East London or our Hammersmith Depot in West London, you will be required to cover an area encompassing most of North London. This is a safety-focused role, and will require you to work closely with your team members. Please note, the normal working hours are 6:30am - 3:45pm; with 1 week out of 5 on night shift from 9:00pm - 5:30am (for which you will receive additional payment).

What makes this role unique?

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a great team in London's historic network of sewers, some of which dates back to the Victorian ages. There are less than 40 roles in the country which carry out this function and experience the Sir Joseph Bazelgette sewer network first hand. There are opportunities to work on innovative new projects such as the Thames Tideway Tunnel, meet key stakeholders and even take part in filming for TV programmes! You will use a variety of mechanical techniques and innovative ideas to maintain and repair the ageing network keeping it running for the residents and businesses of London in this crucial role.

What will this role involve?

This role involves:

Working in confined spaces, working at heights and lifting heavy loads.

Maintenance of the sewer network and associated assets.

Operation of plant and equipment.

Cleaning, basic mechanical maintenance and fault-finding.

Surveys and safety cover for contractors.

Possibility of driving 7.5t vehicle.

What are we looking for?

This role will suit someone that has previously held a manual labouring role and will be capable of carrying out all tasks. You will be required to work outdoors all year round and mainly in underground assets, therefore it is essential that you are physically fit, prepared to work in confined spaces and in a challenging environment on a daily basis. You must be willing to get stuck in, with a proactive approach to your work and demonstrate how you can positively contribute to a team. A full manual valid UK driving licence is essential and a 7.5t HGV licence is desirable. Drainage knowledge and a mechanical background would be advantageous as well as a desire to learn.
