The Chief Engineer is accountable for the delivery of all engineering work on-time, on-quality and on-budget, across a related portfolio of crypto programmes.

The Chief Engineer will have oversight responsibility for a team of Engineering Project Leads who each lead all engineering work for one or more projects within the Chief Engineer's portfolio. They will work closely with the Engineering Project Leads to ensure that the technical solution is sound, the engineering work is following process, the scope of work is properly bounded with work packages.

The Chief Engineer will work closely with the PM for their portfolio area to ensure a robust forecast of engineering costs, schedule adherence, and engineering resource demands. They will work closely with the Heads of Discipline (functional resource owners) to ensure that assigned personnel are suitably qualified and experienced, identifying and feeding back performance concerns and driving these to resolution to ensure project needs are met.

The Chief Engineer will work with technologists, business development and customers to ensure a future roadmap for the portfolio is defined. They will support bids and proposals relevant to their portfolio by reviewing and approving cost estimates, supported by functional and technology experts as required.

The Chief Engineer will not necessarily be a subject matter expert but will be accountable for drawing upon Subject Matter Expertise from within the business as required to execute his or her responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensuring all projects have the appropriate level of Work Package Management applied, with regular review and reporting of progress against the Work Packages.
  • Early identification of project issues impacting compliance, schedule, milestones or costs, development of mitigation and/or recovery strategies and appropriate escalation to the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Coaching, supporting and overseeing the Engineering Project Leads in the delivery of their projects by ensuring all aspects of the delivery are being considered and that company processes are being followed.
  • Ensuring that there is a realistic, achievable and ambitious plan in place for project delivery for all projects within their portfolio.
  • Ensuring that technical and engineering risk is pro-actively managed with suitable mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Managing the start-up of projects, definition the Engineering WBS and OBS, and supporting the formation of the right project team.
  • Defining the delivery strategy for a project and the appropriate process tailoring (via the management plans).
  • Forming a strong relationship with the PM to collaboratively deliver projects.
  • Presenting the position of the projects at project reviews.
  • Leading the definition of the technology roadmap for the portfolio area, coordinating input from technologists, business development and customers, and harmonising this with current project and IRAD development.
  • Ensure all development is compliant with relevant internal and external processes and legislation.
  • Acting as a senior representative with customers, suppliers and other external bodies relevant to own portfolio area and using this to constructively further the company's aims.

Role requirements

  • Track-record of delivering large, complex multi-disciplinary development programmes to budget and schedule
  • Proven ability to build positive relationships and hold challenging conversations with a wide range of stakeholders and senior management
  • Demonstrable experience of acting with integrity and ethics, delivering challenging messages and making tough decisions in the face of pressure
  • Experience across the whole project lifecycle, from bids and proposals through to in-service support
