Commercial Business Partner - Maritime

Part Time 22.5 hours per week
Homebased with occasional travel likely to be based within Portsmouth.

The Vessel Replacement Programme (VRP) team are responsible for delivering new maritime services vessels to the MOD as part of DMS-Next Generation Contract 1. This exciting Programme will oversee the design, procurement, delivery and integration into service of the fleet of Tugs, Barges and other auxiliary craft for maritime tasks in the Royal Navy's Dockyard Ports.

Serco have an exciting opportunity for a Commercial Business Partner to join our Maritime team based in Portsmouth. The key purpose of the commercial operations business partner is to deliver commercial operational specialist advice and guidance to the Head of Vessel Replacement Programme and Future Capability. 

The Vessel Replacement programme is a critical defence deliverable which requires significant specialist commercial support to deliver an acceptable operational and commercial risk profile.

Main Accountabilities:


  • Deliver commercial support to the negotiation of commercially clear and concise Key User Requirements with the MOD customer to ensure Serco risk position minimised for vessel delivery.
  • Deliver commercial support to the negotiation with subcontractors (Overseas and UK) to ensure a fully understood an acceptable risk position into governance.
  • Ensure Build team including managers and technical superintendents understand contractual terms and are operating and delivering within the correct constraints.
  • Lead for any contract escalations, disagreements through MOD or Shipyards and responsible for either resolving or escalating these where required. 
  • Develop and implement policies, processes and systems as required for the effective operational and commercial management of the VRP Programme including change management and variations. 
  • Liaise effectively with key stakeholders within BU, Customer and Legal and Contracts team in Hook. 
  • Work with bid and operational teams, and where appropriate within bid teams, to develop commercial positions which optimally balance the division's exposure to risk.
  • Support the negotiations with the Head of VRP and team to create a commercially viable VRP programme with clear and well understood milestones aligned to the ITEAP process. 
  • Deliver commercial support into future capability as required by Head of VRP.
  • Act as a trusted, visible and accessible point of contact to business leaders; providing commercial decision support; challenge and insight into business profitability to drive future performance.
  • Understand the customer landscape and their drivers to provide contract / service optimisation recommendations, ensuring an acceptable balance of risk and return.
  • Evaluating risk exposure and limits of liability in conjunction with relevant insurance policies in place versus financial returns on offer in context of wider Serco Group corporate. governance. Develop detailed policy guidance on commercial positions and management specifically for technical and build superintendents.


What you'll need:


  • Relevant professional qualification (or demonstrate equivalent experience and acumen). 
  • Sound knowledge of commercial, contracts and maritime law.
  • Diligent and thorough approach.
  • Positive personal impact and effective influence skills.
  • Ability to handle demanding workload with a 'can-do' attitude.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally within the UK and Overseas as required (limited).
  • Ability to obtain SC Clearance.
