About the Role
We have an excellent opportunity for a talented Computer Systems Administrator to join the Diamond Scientific Computing team and make a real contribution to cutting-edge science by providing cluster computing support to Diamond.
This role covers the full cluster computing stack: hardware, Linux operating systems and cluster job scheduler (currently Altair Grid Engine). These supported systems underpin scientific research at Diamond with the expected high demands in performance and availability that come with fast detectors and High-Performance Computing operating around the clock.
The main focus in this role will be to provide technical expertise on cluster computing systems but the Scientific Computing Team is responsible for all of the science-enabling computing that our researchers require to get the best results as quickly as possible. You will contribute to solving any challenges that come our way; there is no limit to what you can learn. Innovation and creativity are encouraged, as well as a desire to automate as much as possible.
Further responsibilities will include:

The role will be primarily working from home initially, but may include time on site for training, with a view to increasing the time spent on site over future months as circumstances allow.
You will be a keen problem solver with a desire to learn new skills and technologies.
You will be educated to degree level in a computing or science subject or demonstrate equivalent working experience.
You will have experience of systems administration in Linux or Unix experience.
You will also have experience of modern computer systems; common hardware configurations and management, along with experience of common network protocols such as PXE, DHCP, DNS, CIFS and NFS.
Experience of scripting languages such as Perl or Python is desirable, as is experience of working with a cluster computing job scheduler.
You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills to allow interaction with staff and facility users at all levels.

This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme.
