Craft Apprentice- Process Instrument Technician

Position Brand Description: 

The purpose of the skilled trades / craft apprenticeship program is to develop top talent for skilled trades careers at Lilly.? This Department of Labor (DOL) Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position. Apprentices in this program will be placed into Lilly-managed maintenance departments with the appropriate mentor(s) to ensure robust hands-on, on-the-job (OJT) training. The apprentice will work 80% on-site per week onsite and attend related technical skills classes 20% per week, leading toward a Technical Certificate or Associates's Degree. This program is a 4-year, 8,000-hour, nationally registered Apprenticeship Program. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, a U.S. DOL Journeyman’s Certification will be issued. 

The apprentice’s work schedule will be determined based on the post-secondary college schedule and criteria set forth by the Apprenticeship Training Committee (ATC). 

 

Key Objectives/Deliverables: 

Process Instrument Technician: The Process Instrument Technician apprentice will learn how to perform maintenance on process instrumentation equipment and related control systems. Tasks include installation, calibration, testing, maintenance, and repair of process control systems and instrumentation.  

Attend Ivy Tech Community College to earn a technical certificate in Industrial Electrical Technology 

OJT training will take place in a variety of production environments, including laboratories, warehousing and packaging, clean and aseptic production rooms, mechanical rooms, utility spaces, and outdoors.  

The apprentice will learn:  

To accurately and safely perform equipment maintenance, metrology, or related support activities as per procedure or protocols 

To Perform data entry and review own work for accuracy in accordance with procedures, standards, and GMP requirements 

Diagnosis of equipment faults  

To comply with Health & Safety legislation at all times 

To ensure the quality of output at all times 

To accurately record all work undertaken 

Continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles 

 

Strict adherence to all safety and environmental rules, regulations, compliance requirements, procedures, practices, and training. 

Demonstrate excellent self-management skills; report to work on time and ready to work, dressed appropriately for work in a maintenance shop, perform assignments in a safe manner, maintain good housekeeping, and display good learning ability. 

Maintain good communications with mentors, maintenance leadership, and program facilitator(s), reporting all safety and environmental concerns immediately. 

Must be able to work effectively on a team, as well as work independently. 

Work with a mentor to learn trade-related skills; learn and demonstrate good work and safety practices. 

Maintain excellent ratings on his/her periodic evaluations. 

 

Basic Requirements: 

Must be at least 18 years old before starting work. 

High School Diploma or equivalent 

Must successfully pass a company-required drug screening. 

Must successfully pass a background screening. 

Must be able to provide proof of identity and eligibility to work. 

Must be able to read, speak and write English at a sufficient level to follow instructions and communicate effectively in a business environment. 

Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, work outside in potentially hot or cold weather conditions and not be afraid of heights or tight places. 

Completion of a Fit for Duty (post-offer exam) is required for this position (e.g., physical strength to lift 40 pounds waist high.) 

 

Additional Preferences: 

Some proficiency with safely using hand tools and power tools. 

Classes in skilled trades, mathematics, or other technical disciplines is desired, but not required. 

Some proficiency with using computers. 

Willingness to take a night class, and/or do required homework, as necessary. 

 

Additional Information: 

This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed-term position up to a maximum of 4 years.
