Serco have an exciting opportunity to join the Marine Team in Portsmouth as a Deck Rating. 

As a Deck Rating, your purpose is to act as the main labour force aboard any vessel or facility that requires an AB grade. You will also carry out a range of duties in the task of assisting in the safe operation of the vessel or the handling of its cargo.


Main Accountabilities:


  • Berthing/Slipping of the Vessel.  
  • Ship Husbandry Tasks. 
  • Mooring up of the Vessel when going to anchor.  
  • Ship Operational Tasks.
  • Cleaning Tasks as directed by the Line Manager. 
  • Emergency equipment and procedures and location and use of fire fighting equipment.  
  • Drive deck machinery including cranes.  
  • Assist in repair and maintenance of ship's equipment. 
  • Machinery care, routine maintenance and lubrication as directed by the Barge Master.
  • Issuing and Receiving cargo
  • Valve operation
  • Hose and connector handling
  • Crane operations
  • Ensure measures to prevent pollution of the environment are exercised
  • Rope handling
  • General maintenance and ships husbandry
  • Other deck related tasking's through the port as reasonable appropriate to qualification and experience
  • To live locally and be within daily commuting distance of Portsmouth Naval Base (no live onboard option)

  • AB's Ticket
  • Basic Sea Survival 
  • Fire Fighting
  • ENG 1 Medical. 
  • Rope handling
  • First Aid
  • Sea survival
  • Crane operation
