Here at Serco, we are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to hold accountability for the integrity of the financial information in the Health Business Unit (BU) through the maintenance of an effective control environment. This is a £200m+ revenue business unit which delivers hard and soft FM services to 10 hospital contracts. This will encompass ensuring that the financial data and metrics for the BU are correct and adhere to UK&E Serco policies and that the processes that support the reporting of those figures are robust, efficient and are applied consistently across the BU.  

 

In this key role, you will lead the promotion and adoption of operational excellence design principles to continuously improve the ways of working in the BU finance function. This will require the building and maintenance of effective relationships with UK&E & Group finance, External Auditors and BPO suppliers.

 

To succeed in this role, you will be a self-starter who can own and drive consistent delivery of regular and recurring activities and drive financial process change through the BU. You will be expected to have a passion for the quality of your output, an intolerance for inefficiencies and the motivation to drive process excellence.
 

As part of this you'll:

 

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and process excellence to improve the quality and efficiency of the process that sit within that control environment
  • Reduce variation and embed changes to enable the generation of accurate data in our financial systems
  • Drive, own and embed the changes of process and supporting the culture required to achieve reduction in variation across the end-to-end financial process set
  • Work with Global Process owners to consider the effectiveness and implement the improvements to end to end processes
  • Translate UK&E requirements and design and implementation of plans to deliver right first time, accurate responses
  • Ensure the smooth running of the External audit process and the minimisation of audit issues
  • Drive the Strategic Plan and Budget process within the BU to meet all required deadlines including presentation packs
  • Provide Business Partner support to BU Overhead budget holders, including Business Development and reporting of bid spend
  • Build strong working relationships across the business and particularly with Serco's BPO supplier

 

What you'll need to do the role:
 

  • You will need to be a qualified accountant with experience of working in a large and complex environment
  • Demonstrable experience of process improvement will be considered favourably
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding and adoption of Serco's values and ethics
  • Experience of coordinating external audit cycles for a large business
  • Knowledge of working with a shared service centre and experience of delivering change across a multi stakeholder matrix environment
  • Experience of bringing together operational and financial data to provide insight to support decision-making and margin improvement.
  • Up to date knowledge of international accounting standards along with industry best practices and accounting skills
  • Process and/or operational excellence implementations and understanding of continuous improvement.
  • Good understanding of finance systems and standardised processes
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills to influence
  • Excellent MS Office skills, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Awareness of business intelligence.
