The Job Opportunity


Your primary job purpose will be the delivery of Psychological Services to the Therapeutic Community at HMP Dovegate. You will be based upon one of 5 Therapeutic Communities within HMP Dovegate or on the Induction Unit and will be responsible for the providing psychological consultancy on your community as well as ensuring that all the required psychological assessments are completed with residents during the assessment process. 


You will work under the Head of Custodial Psychological Services and alongside other Forensic Psychologists within the team to ensure the delivery of Psychological Services within the TC ensuring that psychological work is compliant with the BPS and HCPC codes of conduct. This will involve line management and supervision of Forensic Psychologists in Training.  To complete psychological assessments as required and provide psychological consultancy to the TC specifically regarding risk and the management of complex offenders.  To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver group based therapy.


Daily Duties Involve


  • Manage and supervise FPiT.
  • To have oversight of the TC assessment process ensuring all psychological assessments are delivered to a high standard and reports produced within deadlines.
  • Making clinical decisions regarding selection/ deselection from induction unit and during the assessment process as well as external referrals.
  • To be Designated Supervisor for Forensic Psychologists in Training enrolled on Stage 2 of the BPS Diploma in Forensic Psychology and supervision for newly registered psychologists, ensuring they work in line with the Code of Conduct of the British Psychological Society.
  • Completion of Parole reports complying with deadlines.
  • To carry out psychological assessments of prisoners including HCR-20, WAIS, IPDE and PCL-r.
  • Provide a consultancy role to the Therapeutic Communities and TC managers.
  • To conduct research on the TC.
  • Contribute to therapy reviews.
  • Attend clinical meetings and supervision within the TC as well as all identified training.


What we are looking for in our candidates


  • Minimum:   Forensic Psychologist Registered with HCPC or experienced Forensic Psychologist in Training approaching qualification, with registration being no more than 6 months away.
  • Desirable:  Chartered with BPS including full membership of the Division of Forensic Psychology


  • Significant post-qualification experience of working as a Forensic Psychologist.
  • Experience of working with offenders and carrying out assessments and interventions with a forensic population. 
  • Experience of supervising others.
  • Experience of managing staff. 
  • Experience of working with personality disordered offenders.



  • Experience of working within a Therapeutic Community.
  • Experience of writing parole reports for life sentenced prisoners, completing HCR-20, PCL-r, IPDE assessments.  
  • Experience of research.



  • Psychological theory regarding prisoners and forensic environments, particularly working with violent and personality disordered offenders.
  • Familiar with the 'what works' literature and of a range of psychotherapeutic treatment approaches. 
  • Understanding of literature underpinning democratic therapeutic communities and the principles of therapy.



  • Administration, scoring and interpretation of psychological assessments such as WAIS, HCR-20, PCL-r, IPDE, VRS.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work collaboratively with offenders.
  • Able to motivate and manage staff.
  • Experienced and skilled in working in a multi-disciplinary way.
  • Ability to develop bespoke psychological courses.
