Job Title:  Functional Skills Tutor

Salary: £32,132- £34,731 per annum plus Serco benefits

Location: HMP Dovegate, Uttoxeter

Working hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week, 7:45am- 4:30pm

This role is on a 12-month Fixed Term Contract with a view to becoming a Permanent role.

 

 

Here at Serco we are looking for Functional Skills (Maths and English) Tutor to join our team at HMP Dovegate a category B male establishment prison based on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border near Uttoxeter. The operational capacity is for 1100 prisoners and it takes a whole team of people to keep the facility safe, secure and in proper working order.

 

As a Functional Skills Tutor you will develop, administer and teach Functional Skills courses in line with the core curriculum and awarding body specification(s) to learners that cannot access main education. You will be teaching learners around the prison in an Outreach capacity.

 

The Functional Skills tutor will contribute to curriculum development in your subject.  You must be competent in teaching Pre- Entry to Level 2 in both Maths and English. You will be responsible for Quality Assurance of your teaching and/or other duties. Additionally, you will assist College Leaders/ Head of Learning and Skills in the delivery of an education provision which increases employability, reduces the likelihood of reoffending and prepares prisoners for a successful return to the community.

 

Furthermore, you will act as a Personal Tutor to groups of students and undertake the duties associated with this pastoral role. Engage in core duties including preparation, marking, monitoring student progress, preparing reports, setting and marking of examination papers, developing and preparing flexible learning materials, writing schemes of work and mentoring.

 

 

What you need to do the job:

 

This is an opportunity for an inspiring tutor with a background in education and will have had some experience of working within your specialist area. Good technical knowledge and skills are essential.  Experience of working with learners from non-traditional backgrounds would also be beneficial. You will be gifted in delivering varied, high quality and imaginative sessions and have a record of good retention and success rates.

As a minimum you will hold the level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) and a Level 3 in Functional Skills (Maths and English).

 

Having experience of a custodial environment would be an advantage.

 

Similarly, having experience of working with learners from non-traditional backgrounds would be highly beneficial for this post.
