Working in collaboration with the Custodial Manager and Senior Custodial Manager, you will be required to oversee the daily operations of the Gymnasium Facility at HMP Dovegate, accurately reporting attendance and progression, as well as establishing an inclusive environment for all that work and reside here.

 

You will be required to have the health and wellbeing of both staff and prisoners at the forefront of your mind, with the ability to lead, educate and upskill a group of established Prison Officers within the department.

 

You will be the strategic lead for improvement planning, organisation and implementation of an annual event calendar, that is tailored for a custodial setting, ensuring we offer Physical Education in accordance with Prison Service Instructions (PSI), Prison Rules and HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) and assisting in the delivery of CDI's.  

 

Key Accountabilities 

  • To ensure full operational running of the Gymnasium Facility on site
  • To Support future Ofsted inspections, Learning and Skills elements of
    HMIP inspections to ensure evidence is in line with expectations.
  • To motivate and provide solutions for prisoners not engaging with the       gym, working in partnership with the Substance Misuse Team, Safer Custody, Healthcare and the Mental Health Team
  • To assist the Senior Custodial Manager to deliver on contractual obligations and strategically plan and implement Educational Delivery into the Gymnasium, in relation to AQA Qualifications
  • To understand education wider departmental practices
  • To monitor learner data to ensure achievement of benchmarking, implementing appropriate remedial actions where necessary
  • To represent the gym department at meetings throughout the secure estate, as required.
  • To deliver regular gym team meetings with the Senior Custodial Manager
  • To assist in responses to formal Prisoner complaints/queries, taken appropriate remedial action where necessary
  • To submit procurement request
  • To support, listen and develop all departmental staff
  • To ensure that health and safety procedure are compiled at all times
  • To maintain all relevant Health and Safety documents, such as Safe Systems of work and Risk Assessments that are applicable to the gym
  • To maintain links and information exchange with appropriate partnerships
  • To undertake other duties as directed by Senior Management

Strategically plan, develop and implement an improvement plan for the health and wellbeing of both staff and prisoners.

 

 

Qualifications:
 

Minimum

  • GCSE (Grade 4 or above) Maths and English Language
  • Level 2 Fitness Instructor (or equivalent)
  • Level 3 Gym Instructor (or equivalent)
  • Level 3 in Personal Training
     

Desirable

  • Leadership and Management Qualification
  • Level 3 Award in Nutrition
  • Level 3 Exercise and GP Referrals
  • Level 4 Certification for Advanced Personal Trainers
  • Level 4 Strength and Conditioning
  • Weight Management & Diabetes
     

Experience:

 

  • Knowledge and experience of operations within a Health and Wellbeing Setting
  • Coordinating Fitness Programmes

Custodial experience not essential for this role however those without custodial experience will be required to complete the Prison Officer Training Course (9 weeks)
