12-month fixed term contract, Full time Monday- Friday 08:30-17:00 with occasional OOH and w/e cover.
Scotland - HMNB Faslane, Dunbartonshire, G84 8HL- Other travel as required to Greenock & Kyle of Lochalsh.

Serco have an exciting maritime opportunity available for a Marine Superintendent to join their current team based in Scotland. 
Our Marine Superintendent will provide professional leadership and management in continuing to ensure legislative and marine regulatory compliance of personnel and platforms while delivering operational outputs on behalf of the Customer and Company.  


The key purpose of our Marine Superintendent is to ensure that Clyde In Port, BUTEC and allocated Out of Port vessels meet the standards and criteria required by the Company, Customer, Class and Statutory regulations and to ensure that Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) operate Company vessels in a safe, efficient and economical manner, and in full compliance with such requirements and regulations.  Our Superintendent also fulfil the role of Company Security Officer (CSO) for ISPS vessels and when required will horizon scan for changes in legislation and regulations to ensure continued compliance and to manage the relationship/liaise with Regulatory and Professional Bodies, Port Authorities, Serco Maritime Training Department, other Training Providers and wider industry organisations.   


Main Accountabilities:

 

  • Ensure Customer, Company and Regulatory requirements are met for vessels operated in a safe, efficient, and economical manner.
  • Regular reviews of operational procedures, monitoring and taking action to ensure compliance. Liaise with colleagues across Maritime Services to formulate policies and operational practices/procedures that may have 'cross port' applicability. 
  • Plan and conduct vessel audits, drills and underway assessments that ensure professional standards are maintained while complying with regulatory and Company requirements.
  • Identifying issues within SMS, ensuring effective corrective actions are taken and verified.
  • To drive professionalism, H&S assurance improvements and best practice across the Scottish ports to develop and maintain a positive safety culture.
  • Trials planning and execution to ensure development and maintenance of safe operational procedures for existing and new build vessels.  
  • Support the Operations Manager in his translation of the Head of Port Operations 'Priorities and Objectives'.
  • To support the Head of Port Operations and Operations Managers in seeking growth and new business opportunities.
  • Responsible and accountable for the management of assigned training budget, approve Purchase Orders and Invoices in support of training objectives and priorities. 
  • To provide subject matter expertise to Directors and Managers in support of organic growth and marine related bids. 
  • To develop and maintain a network of internal and external relationships to enable the meeting of current and future regulatory/legislative requirements and operational needs. (e.g. MCA, MAIB, BTA).
  • To provide a lead and example in customer service excellence and continuous improvement culture. 
  • To provide leadership, management, and oversight of afloat personnel to ensure compliance, instil professionalism and foster understanding of, and motivation to achieve, objectives.
  • In conjunction with the Technical Manager, ensure that all assigned vessels are maintained in a safe and seaworthy condition in accordance with Company procedures and Statutory requirements, as well as complying with environmental monitoring and protection regulations.
  • Engage with HSEQ team members to ensure mutual support in addressing joint objectives, taking the lead in matters pertaining to Maritime Regulatory Safety and Compliance and a supporting role with broader Company and Health and Safety Executive Requirements.

 

What you'll need to do the role:

 

  • Hold a Master (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency.
  • At least 10 years sea experience as a qualified deck officer. 
  • ISM Internal Auditor Certification.
  • Comprehensive, up to date knowledge of UK Statutory Regulations/Classification Regulations. 
  • IT literate in Microsoft Software including Teams. 
  • Experience of Incident investigation (desirable).
  • People management in a unionised environment (desirable).
  • Operational experience of both MoD and commercial environments (desirable).
  • Vessel chartering - legal requirements (desirable).
