Mechanical Engineer

The Role

BAE Systems are looking for a professional Mechanical Engineer to work within the weapons design team.

As part of BAE Systems Platforms and Services organisation in the USA, Weapon Systems (UK) designs, develops, manufactures and supports artillery systems, naval guns, small and medium calibre barrels and provides engineering capability to the wider BAE systems business. Our global reach brings our customers a depth and breadth of expertise that meet critical needs in the air, on land, and at sea.

Our UK manufacturing site is based at BAE Systems Barrow in Furness site and is supported by a design team which includes Electronics, Software and Mechanical engineering disciplines.

Typical duties/tasks:

Not limited to...

• Populate Design development documentation by working with the Integrated Project Teams (IPT) using a Formal Design Review process (FDR) through the stages of:
• Requirements & Root Cause Analysis
• Developing Candidate Solutions
• Candidate down selection and risk reduction
• Development for manufacture
• Qualification
• Derive functional system requirements from customer needs.
• Concept generation and development of weapons sub systems including:
• Structures
• Ammunition feed systems
• Elevation / traverse systems
• Man Machine Interfaces
• Weight optimization of systems / structures via re-design and / or use of advanced materials.
• Develop designs in line with requirements and all quality and technical standards.

Skills/Experience:

Essential...

• Analytical skills
• Problem solving skills
• Presentation / report writing skills
• Good communication skills and ability to operate at all levels within the company and with the customer
• Experienced in CAD (ideally PTC Creo)

Desirable...

• Engineering background in a weapons system or design for military use.
• Structural / Stress analysis (MS Excel, Mathcad, FEA {PTC Simulate / Ansys})
• System control (Matlab /Simulink)
• Hydraulic system design
• Pneumatic system design

Qualifications:

The candidate will have ideally been educated to degree level or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline with at least 3 years postgraduate experience within an engineering environment, or to HNC level with 5 years relevant experience.

Security Requirements: SC - Start on BPSS

This role will require you to hold or be eligible to obtain Security Clearance (SC). You will need to obtain a BPSS check as part of this process. You must be eligible to work in the UK without sponsorship and have lived and worked in the UK for a minimum 5 year period. The Umbrella rate quoted above is the Gross Umbrella rate (i.e. the rate we pay to the Umbrella Company inclusive of ALL employment costs). Please note, the rate paid by the Umbrella will be less, as will a Limited Deemed rate or Agency PAYE rate. Please get in touch to discuss the rates via these different payment vehicles.
