Plumber/Fitter Mechanical Operative

£26,000- £29,000 per annum plus benefits 

We currently have an opportunity for a Plumber/ Fitter Mechanical Operative to join our team to be based at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham. Serco is contracted to provide Total Facilities Management to the Defence Academy of the UK (DA). This prestigious establishment is responsible for post-graduate education and the majority of the command, staff, leadership, Defence management, acquisition and technology training for members of the UK Armed Forces and MOD Civil Servants. Serco supports the DA as the MOD's primary link with UK universities and international military educational institutions.

Main responsibilities of the role include: 


  • Carry out pre-planned maintenance, reactive work and minor works.
  • PPM activities may include filter replacements, fan belt changes, water system flushing, fan inspections and other mechanical related works.
  • Reactive work includes water system leak repairs, unblocking drains, replacing of failed valves, taps, baths, toilets etc. Also repairs to garage doors, repairs to failed fans and any other mechanical related works.
  • Emergency response to immediate break downs will be required where there is a complete loss of critical services e.g. flood pumps at JSCSC College, etc.
  • Corrective actions to pipe work and systems where repairs are necessary due to failure in use e.g. corroded or frost damaged pipes, etc.
  • Fault diagnosis of system problems by identifying the cause and affect quickly to reinstate and minimise any potential system down time.
  • Work productively with other Serco personnel, ensuring that their productivity and attitude is not adversely affected by your actions and/or behaviour
  • Ensure all confidential information remains within the company and is not relayed in either verbal or written form to persons or organisations outside the company
  • Adhere to all company protocols and procedures
  • To subject all areas of responsibility to continuous review with the objective of identifying and implementing improvement and cost saving measures.

What you'll need to do the role:


  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate a positive proactive approach to the role and will be committed to delivering customer service excellence.
  • Completion of a recognised apprenticeship 
  • Post apprenticeship experience preferably within the construction or maintenance industries
  • City & Guilds level 2/3
  • IPAF/PASMA preferred
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Health and Safety course for tower scaffolding, COSHH, manual handling, risk assessment, First Aid
