Principal Enterprise Architect

Your new role

Here at National Highways, we have an exciting opportunity for three vacancies within our Architecture Services Group.

As part of the continuous evolution of our Architecture Services Capability, we are growing our team. We are segmenting the enterprise into domains, platforms and portfolios so we can more effectively shape the direction of our technology at a time of great change. We have a very diverse and unique technology landscape, and this is an opportunity to play a vital role in shaping this as we move into our third roads period of funding.

Being a Principal Enterprise Architect, you will set, evolve and communicate the enterprise architecture direction, principles, and strategies. Enterprise Architects are thought leaders for the evolution and advancement of enterprise architecture across all the architecture domains they orchestrate as well as the architecture community, which they proactively manage and develop across National Highways and the wider delivery ecosystem.

You will deliver assurance services to ensure the appropriate governance frameworks are followed, ensure alignment and compliance between business strategies, enterprise transformation activities and technology direction, roadmaps, policies, standards and practices.

This role can be flexibly based within the UK, as well as working in a hybrid capacity. We are a national team so there will be a requirement for occasional travel to one of our offices for meetings, most commonly Birmingham.

This is an exciting and fast paced role that will allow you to work with fellow specialists to improve the way in which NH utilises technology. This encompasses both a traditional IT corporate ecosystem alongside the Operational Technology (OT) roadside and control room hardware and software being supplied to National Highways (NH). Experience in operational technology would be advantageous but not essential.

What you’ll be leading on

  • Own and develop the EA strategy and roadmaps from a business and technology perspective, including ‘as-is’, ‘to-be’ and transitional states.
  • Lead the establishment, orchestration, evolution and promotion of the architectural principles, community, policies and standards across multiple domains and frameworks to deliver measurable business benefits.
  • Govern and assure technology decisions, ensuring alignment and compliance to the architectural guardrails, principles, policies, standards as well as the Enterprise Architecture (EA) strategy and roadmaps.
  • Act as the authority for enterprise architecture across National Highways providing subject matter expertise across the organisation and supplier ecosystem, ensuring dependencies, risks and opportunities are identified and managed. Share best practice, drive continuous improvement and driving efficiencies through effective reuse of architectural patterns.
  • Act as a thought leader for the development and advancement of enterprise architecture. Working with internal and external stakeholders, for example operators and suppliers, to explore and exploit new technologies to drive innovation and identifying the business benefits of alternative strategies.

To be successful you’ll need

  • Able to look beyond the immediate technical problem and identify the wider implications. 'Zooming out' in three dimensions -knowing relevant historical context & future impact, understanding how the current work fits in broader contexts and strategies, and looking for deeper underlying problems and opportunities.
  • Able to work with business and technology stakeholders to translate business problems into architecture patterns. Creating optimal designs through an iterative process, aligning such factors as the user need with the system requirements and organisational objectives.
  • Able to translate technical concepts between Software Engineering, Delivery Management and Service Management so they are understood by all.
  • Capable of making and guiding effective decisions, explaining clearly how the decision has been reached. The ability to understand and resolve technical disputes across varying levels of complexity and risk.
  • Able to understand technical governance and able to participate in or deliver the assurance of a service.
  • Capable of producing strategy for technology that meets business needs. Able to create, refine and challenge patterns, standards, policies, roadmaps and vision statements. Setting the strategy.
