£30,000 - £35,000 per annum plus benefits


Here at Serco, we are recruiting for a Retail Catering Manager to join our team at University Hospital Southampton to cover maternity leave on a 12-month fixed term contract. This role will manage and be responsible for the delivery of the site retail catering service within a demanding healthcare environment. This will include operational management, development, continuous improvement, monitoring adherence to health and safety, and ensuring the delivery of a high-quality, consistent, and compliant service to patients, staff and visitors.


The successful candidate will hold budgetary responsibilities for the service and food production area, including costing menus to ensure gross profit targets are met, managing food stock levels, ensuring stock is maintained at appropriate levels and monitoring cost control.


Main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Take responsibility for building customer advocacy and loyalty with all stakeholders at operational level, including Trust personnel, patients, members of the public, other managers, and work team members by fostering a partnership approach to all relationships.
  • Understands key service drivers and contingencies, and actively works through their team to deliver solutions which enhance the delivery of exceptional service and align to operational requirements and priorities.
  • Provides clear focus, accountability, and engagement to their team, clearly recognising issues, problems and opportunities which may impact team performance, and pro-actively helps to overcome barriers to execution.
  • Measures team progress and evaluates results; reprioritises as appropriate and prevents distractions from interfering with timely delivery of results.
  • Investigating client complaints, implementing action plans and monitoring improvements.
  • Provides high quality compliant services to ensure operational excellence for the customers.
  • Responsible for policy development and implementation and service development within their area.
  • Reviewing working procedures within each area to ensure the requirements of all relevant legislation are fully met.
  • Assist in the development of service procedures and protocols, ensuring they are always up to date and reflective of the service being delivered.
  • Monitor key performance indicators, develop, and agree improvement plans within an agreed timescale where these falls below set standards.
  • Responsible for people management of the frontline teams, including Recruitment and Selection, Training (mandatory and skills), Performance Development Reviews, performance issues, conduct and absence management, process leavers.


What you'll need to do the role:

  • Strong leadership skills: influence, support, and motivation of a large diverse team.
  • Advanced Food Hygiene Certificate Level 3.
  • Experience in a similar role with an understanding of the industry.
  • People management and negotiating skills within a team environment including managing absence, discipline and grievance, performance, and learning and development.
  • Knowledge of recruitment, HR, payroll, and finance.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to create and manage a budget.
  • Computer literate including Microsoft 365.
  • Strong working knowledge of HACCP, COSHH, and Risk Assessments.
