Your new role
National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our Improvements Team in the Darlington office. This role will involve developing road safety, improvement, pedestrian, and cyclist schemes from identification to detailed design for our Designated Funds programme. The role will also involve undertaking Road Safety Audits on a wide variety of scheme types and scales.
You will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have a full clean driving licence to be considered for this position
What you’ll be leading on
- Undertaking evaluation of asset data and identify network needs in order to develop potential solutions, in line with agreed methodologies and prioritisation criteria;
- Preparing briefs for and undertaking appropriate surveys to support the development of possible improvement solutions;
- Developing early solutions for network improvements from feasibility through to the end of preliminary design, including compiling relevant documents, evidence and progressing scheme through appraisal and Value Management, taking into account new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs;
- Working collaboratively with other teams including Programme Development and Scheme Delivery to identify deliverable solutions and contribute to development of the forward programme;
- Ensure that asset data is captured and maintained in the relevant database(s), in line with agreed standards and timescales;
- Undertake Road Safety Audits at all Stages, undertaking all roles;
- Ensure the Health and Safety needs and Wellbeing of our customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
To be successful
- Degree, Higher National Diploma or other appropriate qualification in a relevant discipline for Highway Design;
- Experience working in civil engineering relating to highway works and design;
- Current detailed working knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and advice notes;
- Experience in the preparation of 2D AutoCAD engineering drawings;
- Experience in the specification and procurement of site investigation works.
- Experience in development of preliminary designs for various improvement schemes ensuring adherence to the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and other appropriate standards;
- Appropriate knowledge and training in Health and Safety and Construction Design Management Regulations 2015.
