About the role

We now have several opportunities for passionate Research Software Engineers and Senior Research Software Engineers to join the SCD on either a full time or part time basis, offering an excellent opportunity for career development and an exceptional benefits package alongside a permanent contract.

The department develops and maintains software to support the computing and data requirements of international scientific experiments. We use a wide range of technologies such as Java, C, Python, SQL, Jenkins, RESTful web services, Linux and Cloud.

In this 'full stack' role you will:

  • use agile tools and techniques to play a full part in all aspects of the software development lifecycle
  • make sound technical decisions to guide our development of software systems
  • be involved in DevOps and supporting new and existing systems
  • use tools such as Jenkins to manage the continuous integration and deployment of our solutions we do our best to use the right tool for the job
  • develop your expertise in a wide range of server and client-side technologies and you will research and make recommendations on what tools or technologies we should use when embarking on a project
  • have the opportunity to present your work externally.

About you

It is essential that you have expertise in software development using Java, Python, C++ or similar as well as expertise in software engineering best practice.

Experience of whole stack software projects, experience of contributing to a collaborative software development project and a degree in a technical subject or relevant experience would be desirable for this role.

You must be able to travel occasionally (usually 1-3 days, but up to 1 week), within the UK and overseas as necessary.
