Senior Route Planner

National Highways currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Route Planner to join our Abnormal Loads team within Operations. The Senior Route Planner will contribute to the processing of applications required for the transportation of abnormal loads across the UK; this will include reviewing applications against legislation and government policy, gathering and analysing information in order to assist with decision making and supporting the wider team and carrying out quality assurance checks. The Senior Route Planner will also be liaising with many varied and numerous stakeholders, both internally and externally, planning routes and re-routes necessary for abnormal load vehicles to travel on the public highway safely and successfully.

Please note that this is a hybrid position and will be based in Birmingham. 

What you will be responsible for:

  • Lead on initial assessment of new applications (Special Order and VR1) and  where appropriate, investigate the use of alternative transport options in line with the Governments Water Preferred Policy. 
  • Lead on responding to customer and stakeholder enquires - provision of specialist advice on abnormal loads related policy and regulations to customers and stakeholders.
  • Ensure accurate records are kept demonstrating compliance with policy and support decision making.
  • Assist, develop and encourage route planners, providing support with resolving complex routing enquires to ensure timescales for processing applications are met.
  • Carry out Quality Assurance checks as well as contributing to the development and upkeep of business processes and systems to ensure that these are fit for purpose.
  • Liaise with colleagues, customers, and stakeholders, building and maintaining effective relationships in order to develop efficiency and contribute to the continuous improvement of the services provided.

To be successful: 

  • An awareness of abnormal load procedures, the relevant legislation and ESDAL system is desirable.
  • Experience collating and evaluating information in order to reach an informed decision. 
  • Good attention to detail; being able to analyse complex information and review colleagues’ work by identifying inconsistent data and demonstrate initiative and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication, engagement and customer service skills; be able to engage with and present information to both colleagues and internal / external stakeholders in order to build and maintain effective working relationships. 
  • Experience keeping accurate and detailed records, working to tight deadlines and remaining organised in a busy team environment.
