What is the purpose of the role?
You and your team will be responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the Slow Sand Filters (SSF) at Hampton Water Treatment Works to ensure throughput of production, meeting customer demand in line with company health and safety legislation. You will be performing a range of assigned activities including routine checks, maintenance and operating mobile plant to ensure that services are delivered to time, cost and quality standards.
What makes this role unique?
This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a team that has a direct impact on the treated water that goes straight to the customer. Slow sand filters enable us to supply a third of London's drinking water. This frontline role maintaining these filters enables us to keep up with the demand and ensures London is always fully supplied with water. Slow Sand Filters are cleared in accordance with operational standards, which vary depending on the time of year (summer and winter strategy). This means that the work varies day to day and the majority of the work is outdoors.
What will this role involve?
The role of a SSF technician is primarily made up of three key areas - skimming filters, the removal/ relaying of granular activated carbon (GAC) and re-sanding of SSFs. This is all carried out using specialist mobile plant including skimmers, loading shovels, dumpers and excavators.
Slow Sand Filter Technicians also operate the Floatex plant (Sand Washer) and GAC separation plants. As well as general site housekeeping, plant checks and maintenance.
As with all roles at Thames Water an adherence to legal and company health, safety and hygiene regulations are essential.
What are we looking for?
A slow sand filter is a key part of the water treatment process here at Hampton WTW, we are looking for someone that is going to take pride in the work that they and the team does every day, always striving for the highest standards. We are looking for an enthusiastic and physically fit individual that is willing to learn, although previous plant experience is not essential it is definitely advantageous to your application. You must be prepared to work outdoors in all weathers and prepared to take on a range of manual tasks. This is a team role therefore good communication skills are essential.

This role is based at Hampton water treatment works and is offering a salary of up to £21,500 depending on skills and experience.
