Spacecraft Controller

Corsham, SN13 9NP

Full Time, Permanent (39 hours per week)

Competitive salary plus benefits

Serco Defence are partners in a prestigious contract which provides secure military satellite communications services to governments, armed forces, International Treaty Organisations and businesses around the world.

We currently have a full time opportunity for a Spacecraft Controller to join the team in one of our Space Operations Centres. Reporting to the Spacecraft Operations Manager, this key role will be responsible for designated aspects of spacecraft control as specified in the current space control regulations. Watches of Spacecraft Controllers work in shifts to provide 24 hour / 365 day coverage, with shift work attracting an additional allowance.

Controllers may need to be deployed to any one of our operations centres, so the candidate must hold (and maintain) a full driving licence for a car. Depending on the nature of these deployments, controllers will be working either individually or in a small team, so must be able to prioritise and schedule their own activities and readily accept responsibility for their actions.

The successful candidate will undergo a structured and comprehensive in-house training programme working within agreed timescales towards becoming a fully qualified Spacecraft Controller. This course is engineering based, so a background in science or engineering is highly desirable. All controllers are required to work with the in-house training team to complete all tasks needed to maintain their annual currency as a Spacecraft Controller.

The primary focus of this contract is to provide the UK Ministry of Defence's secure Skynet 5 satellite communications service to the UK Armed Forces. For this the candidate will need to be able to achieve and maintain the appropriate level of UK security clearance.

This role will include aspects of the following:

  • Work 12 hour shifts from one of the SOCs - primarily located at Corsham, Wiltshire.
  • Ensure the health and safety of the spacecraft through timely commanding and effective monitoring of all spacecraft and ground segment telemetry.
  • Correct logging and reporting of routine and non-routine spacecraft and ground segment alarms and events.
  • Navigation through multiple documents to accurately follow procedures in a calm and methodically fashion, ensuring that all spacecraft and ground segment issues are resolved at an appropriate operational tempo.
  • Creating and maintaining manual and automated procedures, completing all supporting documentation and, where appropriate, creating or modifying associated display screens.
  • Understanding and interpreting outputs from spacecraft attitude and orbital prediction software.
  • Correct preparation of spacecraft command plans using relevant procedures, task sheets and flight dynamics data.

What you'll need to do the role:

  • Science or engineering background or proven experience of working in a technical environment.
  • Ability to work methodically, remain focussed and assign priorities under pressure.
  • Flexibility to support shifts in a 24/7 environment.
  • Strong communications skills.

  • Experience of working in a Spacecraft Operations or Satellite Communications environment.
  • Understanding of spacecraft flight dynamics and use of orbit predication tools.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with a procedural programming language.
