Between £37,000 and £42,000 per annum (dependent on experience) 


Here at Serco, we are seeking an enthusiastic Sustainable Procurement Specialist to support sustainable procurement adoption at Serco and report to the Risk and Sustainability Director within Group Procurement.



As Sustainable Procurement Specialist you will be responsible for supporting the ongoing development and embedding of sustainable procurement performance processes, metrics and best practice, supported by cross functional business stakeholder and key supplier relationships to deliver sustainable procurement insights, projects and initiatives and achieve improvements in line with Serco's sustainable procurement maturity goals.


The role provides analysis and support in the design, implementation, delivery and continuous improvement of sustainable procurement processes and performance across Serco's divisions, business units and contracts. The role supports the progressive realisation of Serco's ambitions as set out in its Sustainable Procurement Charter and supports Serco's ambitions in line with Serco's wider ESG goals.


As part of this you'll:

  • Collaborates with Procurement colleagues and Serco's third-party Procurement Delivery Partner to help ensure sustainable procurement is captured in business requirements, procurement business plans and sourcing, contracting and supplier management activity to drive sustainable value and compliance from the supply chain.
  • Helps to design and integrate sustainability metrics systemically into procurement business planning, sourcing and contracting and governance processes to drive more sustainable procurement decision making
  • Helps create standards for sustainable procurement for key categories to support category teams in embedding sustainability evaluation criteria into sourcing projects and associated metrics into contracts
  • Supports in the building of data and reporting sustainable procurement metrics (baseline, impacts measurement) to demonstrate both the risks mitigated and opportunities realised through sustainable procurement projects and initiatives
  • Designs and implements the process for identifying and updating the list of top carbon emitting categories and suppliers to support Group Environment in Scope 3 carbon reporting and helping achieve Serco's Net Zero targets by helping to establish specific target setting with those suppliers
  • Helps to ensure appropriate risk-based questions related to sustainable procurement are embedded at onboarding stage in a proportionate way and periodically reviewed to ensure continued effectiveness
  • Assists in developing self-serve content for the business on engagement of key suppliers in sustainability impact discussions as part of wider supplier management practiced across the business to facilitate value-creating supplier dialogue and engagement.


What you'll need to do the role:

  • Graduate calibre with a Bachelor's degree
  • Post-graduate qualification (e.g. MSc/MBA) or a professional qualification such as CIPS is desirable but not essential
  • Have the Leadership Behaviours & Capabilities stated as most critical to this role
  • Able to build relationships and work with key stakeholders across the business and demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills so as to engage and collaborate effectively
  • Knowledge of delivering sustainable procurement or similar initiatives in conjunction with wider supplier relationship management is desirable
  • Desire to learn and adopt external best practice to develop and continuously improve sustainable procurement for Serco
  • Strong planning, organising, analytical and fact-based decision-making skills
  • Have a mindset which is flexible to local differences and is creative to encourage the adoption of sustainable procurement across the business in various regions
  • Demonstrates personal and professional credibility and resilience
