Permanent, Full Time, 37.5 hours per week (07:00-15:30 Mon-Thurs , 07:00-13:00 Fri)

Serco Marine Technical Services have an exciting opportunity for a Technician to join the team in Devonport, Plymouth.


Reporting daily to the Base Manager, your key purpose will be to maintain and repair vessels machinery and equipment in a safe, effective and economic manner i.a.w. relevant regulations and company procedures. This is a shore-based position as part of the established technical repair and maintenance team which includes an additional 10 hours outside of the core week Mon - Fri as requested by Vessel Superintendents or Technical Manager (companies compensation policy applies).


Main responsibilities of the role include:


  • To carry out fault finding and defect rectification to items of mechanical plant and apparatus as may be defined and specified by the Technical Superintendents/Manager.
  • To assist other members of the shore side maintenance team with their activities as may be required.
  • To become familiar with the operation and maintenance of various systems and equipment installed on our fleet of vessels.
  • To carry out all duties assigned to him in a safe manner, observing all statutory regulations and the local regulations which may be in force.
  • To have the knowledge of a permit to work system, its requirements and how to submit.
  • As part of the technical team, ensure all spare parts and other items of equipment which may be required are readily available to ensure the continuous and efficient operation of equipment and vessels
  • To maintain records and stock of tools and report as required.
  • To complete any task as formally delegated that falls within the post holders training skill and experience.
  • To undertake the installation, repair, maintenance and manufacture of mechanical systems required by vessels based at Devonport Naval Base,
  • Read drawings, interpret work instructions and perform work on time, to cost and quality standard.
  • Ability to overhaul and install a variety of mechanical equipment in control, distribution and control systems covering areas such as engine room and ship services.
  • Specialise in workshop machinery and hand tools related to the role.
  • To assist in upgrades as requested by Vessel Superintendents.
  • Assist with slipping and un-slipping of vessels and barges
  • Carry out work on any vessel or barge whilst slipped at Morice Yard, including third party.


What you'll need to do the role:


  • Time served fitter with extensive 'hands on' experience
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in engine rebuilds, diagnostics and maintenance
  • Marine industry background
  • Must be able to obtain Home Office Security Clearance
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Team player
  • Ability to self-motivate
  • Ability to use own initiative and to work to tight timescales
  • Ability to prioritise workload, working in a logical and methodical manner
  • Flexible and proactive with a commitment to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels, both in writing and orally (including good telephone manner)
  • Must be able to provide technical reasoning skills to resolve problems associated with the various elements of the post and be able to bench overhaul, clean and adjust specific items of equipment.
