Job summary

We are currently looking for a Chief Officer, Digital Technologies to join our Digital & Technology group.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based at 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf, London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.  We are open to requests for flexible working. Please discuss this with the hiring manager before accepting an appointment.

We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 12 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. There will be a requirement for national and international travel which will include
overnight stays.

Digital technologies are also an important part of the UK life science industry, which is a vital part of the UK Government’s strategy to promote growth in the UK economy. As a national regulator of these technologies, the MHRA has an important role in ensuring the MedTech and Health AI industry is able to flourish in the UK, in a way that improves patient care and benefits the economy.

Job description

What’s the role?

 We are seeking to appoint to a new role of Chief Officer, Digital Technologies who will be a thought leader, able to engage with digital research and development, the MedTech industry, and our international partners to synthesise the changes we need to make as a regulator. As an internal service provider, the postholder will also oversee our internal digital infrastructure and services, ensuring that we implement enabling technology solutions that drive efficiency and effectiveness.

 Key responsibilities: 

Delivering a strategy for the effective regulation of technology and AI in MHRA regulated products, in partnership with the MHRA Executive Committee
Positioning the Agency internationally, as the leading MedTech/digital regulator, helping to make the UK the most desirable place to develop, test and deploy digital technologies in healthcare.
Delivering agreed digital change programmes with particular emphasis on cross cutting developments, including with health and care systems partners
Ensuring that internal MHRA digital and information technology services and IT-enabled changes are effective, consistently meet their service objectives and represent good value for money

Person specification

Our successful candidate will have the following essential criteria:

Demonstrable track record of leading a large, high performing digital innovation team, setting clear strategic direction and leading a diverse set of digital and innovation professionals.
Extensive experience at senior board management level from complex organisations that have a national and international presence. Whilst not essential, within a regulated environment would be beneficial.
Outstanding leadership capability with evidence of delivering change.
Outstanding communication skills with a wide range of stakeholder groups such as medical, scientific, research, media and government officials.
Experience of creating and delivering a compelling vision and purpose in delivering digital innovation and priorities with credibility and impact across various internal and external stakeholders – nationally and internationally.
Experience and appreciation of medical innovation and technology and an understanding of how regulation needs to respond to the opportunities and challenges that innovation presents, including but not limited to experience with AI applications, including the design, training, and deployment of machine learning models or algorithms for medical data.
Track record of building highly motivated teams (internal and external) and establishing collaborative working relationships and partnerships.
Proven experience in the Med Tech sector, including direct involvement in the development, deployment, or evaluation of medical technologies such as digital diagnostics, wearable health devices, clinical decision support systems, or telemedicine platforms
