Controls Engineer

Location: Midlands (with customer-site travel)
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

The Opportunity

We are recruiting for an Controls Engineer to join a growing engineering business delivering automation and control systems projects across a variety of sectors.

This role will involve designing, developing, testing and commissioning PLC, HMI and safety software for bespoke machinery and automation projects. You will work across the full project lifecycle, from initial software design through to commissioning and customer handover.

The position is primarily office-based during the design phase, with travel to customer sites required during commissioning activities. Flexible or hybrid working may be available during suitable project phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop PLC and HMI software for industrial automation and machinery projects.
  • Develop software using Siemens TIA Portal/S7 and/or Rockwell Studio 5000 platforms.
  • Support legacy control systems where required.
  • Write PLC software from first principles based on project specifications and functional requirements.
  • Develop, test and commission safety-related control systems.
  • Configure and commission VFDs, servo drives, motion systems, remote I/O and industrial communication networks.
  • Work with industrial communication protocols including Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP and similar technologies.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, I/O schedules and functional design specifications.
  • Carry out control system and electrical fault-finding during build, testing and commissioning phases.
  • Produce and maintain project documentation including functional design specifications, test records, commissioning reports and operating documentation.
  • Commission systems on customer sites, including occasional overnight stays and weekend working where required.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience programming PLC systems from first principles within an industrial automation, manufacturing or machinery environment.
  • Strong experience with Siemens TIA Portal/S7 and/or Rockwell Studio 5000.
  • Experience writing, testing and commissioning safety-related control software.
  • Experience commissioning VFDs, industrial networks and control hardware.
  • Strong understanding of industrial automation principles and controls engineering.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and translate requirements into functional software solutions.
  • Full UK driving licence.
