Job summary
We are currently looking for an Interaction Designer to join our Digital & Service Design function within the Digital & Technology group.
This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 7-8 Wellington Place, Leeds, LS1 4AP. Our Canary Wharf and South Mimms sites are only available as contractual work locations to existing employees of the MHRA. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. We are open to requests for flexible working. Please discuss this with the recruiting manager before accepting an appointment.
We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 12 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.
A Digital Allowance of up to £12,823 per annum may be available for exceptional candidates based on our assessment of your skills and experience. This allowance is non-pensionable and may change on an annual basis.

The Digital & Service Design group provides a number of services through its practice-based model including user-research, service design, business analysis, change management and product management. D&SDG owns the customer experience for the division and is building its in-house capabilities around Digital Product Management and User Centred Design.
What’s the role?
We’re looking for a knowledgeable Interaction Designer who can contribute to a growing user-centred design practice at the MHRA. The successful candidate will help broaden the capabilities of the practice and be a strong advocate for people who use our services.
The postholder will have a hands-on role in designing digital products and services using the Gov Design System and will be responsible for owning patterns and components that are used across projects in collaboration with the Senior Interaction Designer. You’ll be collaboratively working to define patterns that can be used across the agency’s services and supporting the team in defining how we communicate the need for a consistent user experience and how we can improve our own design system in the future.
You’ll work flexibly in our User Centred Design practice comprising service design, user research and content design. In addition to working within the user centred practice, the postholder will work in multi-disciplinary teams of professionals: including business analysts, software engineers, change managers, product managers and delivery managers.
The successful candidate will have good experience in delivering interaction design with a user-centred, evidence-based approach, liaising with external suppliers and a solid track record of delivering high-quality digital products as well as coordinating customers, colleagues and stakeholders.
At all stages of a project lifecycle, the postholder will be expected to be able to work independently or in collaboration with their multi-disciplinary team. With a good understanding of all user-centred methods for each phase and how interaction design can add value to either discovery or delivery. Being able to creatively problem solve and communicate your decision-making process is a critical part of the role that the postholder will be expected to present on a regular basis to senior stakeholders and service owners.
Key responsibilities:
Provide design guidance and hands-on interaction design for complex projects and portfolios of work within an agile development framework.
Use best practice and standards consistent with the rest of government
Advise and support software engineers in the development of designs, and iterate gov.uk patterns and components
Work closely with service designers to gather and interpret evidence from service design walkthroughs and analysis, using this insight to design solutions and communicate well-reasoned rationale to stakeholders, ensuring that chosen approaches are grounded in user needs and service context.
Work closely with user researchers to provide appropriate designs and prototypes, attend user research sessions, discuss findings use evidence to inform and iterate interaction designs

Our successful candidates will have:
Degree level or equivalent professional experience
Previous experience working as an Interaction Designer within teams designing and delivering digital products and services
Previous experience of working with different types of prototyping tools
Previous experience of working in an agile team
