Contract: Temporary, ongoing from February to May 2026 (possible extension for the right candidate)
Location: Keele - Newcastle-under-Lyme, ST5
Pay: £22.00 per hour, paid weekly
Hours: Full-time - Monday to Thursday 08:30-16:45, Friday 08:30-16:30
Blue Arrow is seeking experienced joiners to carry out repairs, adjustments and fitting work on fire doors across a site in Keele, as well as supporting general maintenance tasks within the site. You will be contributing to essential improvements across their facilities and collaborating with other trades on-site to complete scheduled works.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
You will deliver a wide range of maintenance, repair and planned improvement tasks across the University estate, with a strong focus on multi-skilled workmanship, including:
- Fitting and replacing door hinges
- Installing intumescent strips
- Adjusting fire doors to ensure correct sealing
- Installing drop-down seals
- Replacing door handles
- General carpentry and joinery
- Basic locksmith duties
- Changing door closers
- Working in line with Health & Safety legislation, including preparing work areas and using required PPE
- Ensuring tools and equipment are safely used, maintained and stored
- Completing Risk Assessments, permits and checking registers (e.g., Asbestos)
- Coordinating with the stores team to obtain correct materials
- Responding to urgent repairs, including those outside standard hours, using University vehicles as needed
- Carrying out tasks in confined spaces, at heights, or in adverse weather conditions
- Delivering excellent customer service within established KPIs
- Assisting with vehicle upkeep used for work activities
- Taking on additional tasks within competence when required
- Supporting colleagues with general labouring and cleaning duties
- Setting up access equipment and working from mobile platforms

- Have their own tools
- Communicate clearly and follow instructions effectively
- Maintain excellent timekeeping and daily attendance
- Be able to perform physically demanding tasks
- Be flexible and comfortable taking on varied duties as needed
Essential Requirements
- Safety boots and PPE
- Woodwork machinery qualification (PUWER compliant)
- Significant and relevant post-qualification experience
- Experience in 1st and 2nd fix joinery
- Knowledge of bench machinery
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
- Proven background working as a Joiner
- Ability to work independently when required
- Participation in a 24/7 call-out rota, including fault finding, making safe and conducting repairs
